FDA Approved Myopia Management
Do you or your child struggle to see clearly at a distance? Myopia or nearsightedness is a common cause of this. Wearing traditional lenses can help you see better. But other options are available for slowing the progression of this eye condition in kids or improving it in adults. At Illinois Vision Clinic, our services include FDA approved myopia management in Peoria and Kewanee, IL.
What Causes Myopia?
Being nearsighted typically means that the eye is elongated or oval instead of rounded. This causes light to focus in front of the retina, resulting in blurry images when looking far away. Objects up close look clear.
How Do You Manage Nearsightedness?
Our optometrist, Dr. Kerry Head, can prescribe lenses to wear to correct myopic vision. But note that it can continue getting worse over time with traditional corrective lenses.
What Treatments Has the FDA Approved for Myopia?
In an effort to help manage nearsightedness more effectively and even stop it from getting worse.
The FDA has approved different kinds of lenses:
MiSight Contacts
In 2019, the FDA approved MiSight contacts to slow myopia in children between 8 and 12 years old. These are soft, disposable lenses that are designed for single use, but they shouldn’t be worn overnight.
Ortho-K Lenses
Ortho-K lenses are FDA-approved gas-permeable contact lenses that provide short-term reduction of nearsightedness. These lenses reshape the cornea temporarily while they’re worn, leading to improved vision if you or your child have mild myopia.
SightGlass Vision
In 2024, the FDA gave SightGlass Vision breakthrough device designation for glasses that manage nearsightedness and slow its progression. These lenses scatter light rays across the retina, helping to correct vision — and prevent it from getting worse.
